Want to know how YOU can help? Join us at YYC4Haiti!
This post is not about fitness. It is about hope. Hope for Haiti, and how we can all help.
On January 12th, 2010, Haiti was devastated by the worst earthquake in the country’s history. The entire world has come together to help this already impoverished nation get back on its feet, and Canada is no exception. Our government has pledged to match all donations raised by Canadian charities for the relief effort in Haiti. It will take hundreds of millions of dollors to rebuild the city of Port au Prince, and to get the lives of the survivors of the earthquake back on track.
Three women in the Twitter community in Calgary have come together to bring an idea typed out as a ‘tweet’ to fruition. When they embarked on their mission to organize the largest tweetup Calgary (yyc) had ever seen, Camilla di Giuseppe, Angela MacIssac, and Alex Ruiz had no idea how big the event would turn out to be. They now have a website (www.yyc4haiti.com), a huge team of volunteers, the support of the local professional sports organizations, endless donations by the local community, and a massive venue to host the event.
How can you help? Join us at Flames Central on Thursday, January 28th, 2010 to support the YYC4Haiti cause. All proceeds from the event will go to help the Canadian Red Cross in the relief effort. Let’s show our community spirit, Calgary! Any little bit you can donate will help because it will automatically be doubled by the government. Five dollars becomes ten, ten dollars becomes twenty, twenty becomes forty, and so on. If you cannot join us in person, you can show your support by donating online to the Canadian Red Cross (www.redcross.ca). YYC4Calgary is also accepting both monetary and silent auction donations.
